Frank J. Sulloway

The writer that made me very interested in his writings was Frank J. Sulloway. The writing that interested me the most was Born to Rebel: Birth Order, Family Dynamics and Creative Lives (1996). Sulloway, a PhD scholar discusses how family dynamics affect personality development. Birth order is a topic that interests me because I am the youngest of three siblings, the two older siblings; being sisters. The order in which I was born, did affect my personality. By being the youngest, and the only male, made me a stronger person to voice my opinion when it counts in family matters. Among my friends, I am usually the leader, as I never get to play that part in my home. Sulloway wrote " they also usually have authority over younger siblings." (Sulloway 298) I am treated differently by my parents from the way they treat my sisters. Everything that my sisters did, my parents decided with extra caution. "First borns experience a different family environment than do later borns." (Sulloway 303) When it comes to me, since they have been through things twice before, nothing is never a big deal to them. An example of this is getting a drivers license. When my sisters each got their license, they had to wait a while before they got their first car, which they had to pay with their own money. When I got my license, my parents bought me my first car within a week of having my license. Sulloway’s analysis of birth order is correct. In his book, Born to Rebel, Frank Sulloway writes “the family, it turns out, is not a “shared environment” (Sulloway 1996) but rather a set of niches that provide siblings with different outlooks.” I believe in this statement, as we all trying to find a place in life were we all belong.

The Election!!

Well yesturday was the the election of our new president and its Barack Obama. I was hoping to see John McCain win but not everything can come true. My opinion our country was not ready for the first black president but it turned out that people thought he's the right man for the job. This election was never close from the beginning as America believed Barack was the better man in the race. But its now over and America will now see what Barack Obama can do for our country!!

The blog that i will be writing will be a critical analysis of Frank J. Sulloway. I myself enjoyed the way he wrote in his book "Birth order and sibling competition." He kept me interested throughout the writing and made me want to read more and more. Sulloway wrote about birth order and how siblings are different. He showed many true statements in one saying "although siblings share half their genes and exhibit similarities in personality based on this shared genetic basis, most parents are struck by how different siblings actually are."(Sulloway 299). He is very right about this because in my family we are all different in some way. Sulloway brought up important topics in how siblings can be different. He sounded firm throughout his writing on his topic in how he believes its true. He used alot of facts to back his theory up.

In this blog I'm gonna be talking about a chapter in Frank J. Sulloway book on birth order called "Birth order and sibling competition."He talked about how birth order effects the family.Sulloway makes very good points on how the birth order can help distinguish the differences among siblings. He says that first born will act as a surrogate parent toward there younger siblings. This isn't true for my family since my middle sister acts more like parent to me in helping me out and doing things around the house for my mother. He also writes that first and last born benefit from parental investment. That wouldn't be true for my family since my parents try to give all three of us a good life. He also says that last born receive parental favoritism. This is true since I am a last born and receive some kind of special treatment from my parents. They are alway helping me out with things and always trying to go out of their way to give what I want. They are always giving me spending money when I need it and my older sisters always are jealous for what my parents do for me.

My new Job

Ive just started a new job in Produce this week . You have to put a lot of work into produce at a supermarket since the items are being bought through out the day. This job consist of heavy lifting and making the display look neat. The hardest part about this job is when you have to break down a pallet of fruits and vegetables and find room for it in a small freezer. But so far so good for me
